Draft for legal review — not yet published
These terms apply when you use the KnowYourSpend app or website. By using them you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use KnowYourSpend.
KnowYourSpend is provided by KnowYourSpend Ltd, registered in England and Wales ([company number to follow]), [registered office to follow] ("we"). Contact: hello@knowyourspend.org
1. Who can use KnowYourSpend
You must be 18 or over and use KnowYourSpend for your own personal, non-commercial purposes.
2. What KnowYourSpend does
KnowYourSpend reads bank statements and receipts that you choose, on your device, and estimates which companies ultimately own the businesses you paid and which countries those companies are based in.
3. Estimates, not advice
- Ownership information comes from published sources (including Companies House, Wikidata, GLEIF and OpenStreetMap) and, where those are missing or out of date, from AI estimates, which are labelled "Unverified". Ownership changes, and published sources can be wrong or out of date. Results are estimates and may contain errors.
- KnowYourSpend gives information only. It is not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and you shouldn't rely on it as the only basis for any decision.
- Where the app says a company's parent is incorporated in a particular country or a listed jurisdiction, that is a statement about where the company is registered. It doesn't mean the company has done anything unlawful or avoids tax.
- If you think something is wrong, tell us at hello@knowyourspend.org or use "Report a mistake" in the app, and we'll look into it.
4. Brand names
Brand and company names are used only to identify the businesses on your statement. KnowYourSpend is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of them.
5. Your data and your device
Your statements and the data the app finds stay on your device (see our Privacy notice). Because we never receive them in a form we can read, we can't recover them if your device is lost, reset or the app is deleted. Use the encrypted backup in Settings, or an optional account, if you want a copy. Both are encrypted with a passphrase only you know: keep it safe, as we can't reset it or open your data without it.
If you make an account, keep access to your email address, which is how you sign in. You can delete your account at any time in Settings. We may close an account that is used to abuse the service, and we'll tell you first where we can.
6. Sharing results
The app can make a share card showing your percentages by country. You choose whether to share it and where. Please don't edit a card to show something the app didn't calculate, or add statements about companies that you can't support. You are responsible for what you post.
7. Fair use
Please don't:
- misuse, overload, scrape or try to get around the limits of our look-up service;
- copy or resell our ownership data, except as the open-data licences below allow;
- reverse-engineer the app except where the law allows;
- use KnowYourSpend for anything unlawful.
We may limit or stop access to the look-up service for anyone who does.
8. Open data
KnowYourSpend uses open data: OpenStreetMap's name-suggestion-index (BSD-3-Clause), Wikidata (CC0), GLEIF (CC0), GeoNames (CC BY 4.0) and Companies House data (Open Government Licence). The method page in the app gives full attributions.
9. Changes and availability
KnowYourSpend is free. We may change, suspend or stop it, or these terms. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app first.
10. Our responsibility to you
- We provide KnowYourSpend with reasonable care and skill. Your legal rights as a consumer are not affected by these terms.
- Because KnowYourSpend is free and gives estimates for information, we are not responsible for decisions you make based on it, or for loss that wasn't foreseeable.
- Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't be limited by law.
11. Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring a claim in the courts of England and Wales, or, if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, in your local courts.
